Red Sea Route: A narrow strip of sea running between northeastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, covering a total area of about 450,000 square kilometers (174,000 square miles). The Red Sea extends from Suez, Egypt, southeastward to the Straits of Bab al-Mandeb, about 2,100 kilometers long. The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait connects to the Gulf of Aden and then to the Arabian Sea. The Red Sea is 306 kilometers (190 miles) wide at its widest point.
Red Sea route separates Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia on the west coast from Saudi Arabia and Yemen on the east coast. At the northern end, the Red Sea is divided into two parts: the shallow Gulf of Suez in the northwest and the deep Gulf of Aqaba in the northeast.
