Sea Freight
Sea freight is a shipping method used by businesses to transport large amounts of goods overseas by sea using cargo ships. Since it’s cost-effective, most businesses prefer to use this mode of transportation, when they have to move a huge quantity of goods.
Sea freight is distinct from traditional modes of goods transportation as ideally large loads of good, or heavy machinery is shipped through Sea freight.
In Sea freight, goods are transported in large metal containers (You must’ve probably seen one if you have been to a seaport). There are fewer restrictions imposed on sea freight. Sea freight is also used to transport several crucial commodities for a country, like Oil, Defence Equipment, and Aircraft.
Like other modes of transportation, sea freight too involves seller (manufacturer), buyer, ocean carriers, freight forwarders, brokerage, port authority, and insurance providers.
Advantages Of Sea Freight
Cost Effective
Compared to other modes of transportation, sea freight is hands down the most cost-effective option available to businesses looking to transport huge quantities of goods. Sea freight is four to six times less expensive than air freight since tax duty, and VAT for sea freight is cheaper than air.
Best For Heavy Cargo
Heavy or bulky cargo, like large vehicles, machinery, industrial parts, construction materials, etc, can be handled and shipped easily through sea freight which is not the case for air freights. You cannot transport heavy and bulky cargo in planes, while ships can carry all kinds of heavy items.
Safety
Ships can transport hazardous cargo safely without any issues as. The shipping crew is well trained in handling such cargo and has regulations to ensure the safety of the vessel cargo and environment. The containers are well sealed and locked for extra security, and the crew members inspect the cargo regularly during transit.
Environment Friendly
Shipping has a very low carbon footprint as they consume less fuel than other transportation modes, making it much more eco-friendly than other shipping methods.

After Deciding Your Shipping Terms, The Process Of Concluding The Ocean Freight Will Involve The Following Stages:
Export haulage
This is the start of the shipping journey. At this stage, your goods will be transported from the seller’s warehouse to your freight forwarder’s warehouse.
Export customs clearance
Most countries require goods that are meant for export to first go through clearance. Clearance will include providing a detailed declaration of the cargo, along with supporting documentation.
Origin handling
This stage covers all the activities that will be necessary to prepare your goods for shipping. The cargo will be put in a staging area for inspection and confirmation. Once confirmed, the freight forwarder will issue a cargo receipt confirming that they have received the goods as described. If the shipment is FCL, the goods will be stacked in their container. If LCL, they will be placed in the warehouse to await consolidation with other goods in a container headed for the same destination port. Finally, the container will be trucked to the port of departure to await loading on the ship.
Ocean freight
This is the actual transportation of goods across the ocean. The stages up to this point may take days or weeks, depending on several factors. Ocean freight itself will likely take anywhere from 20-60 days, depending on where the goods are headed. Ocean freight tracking systems provide real-time visibility into the location and status of shipments during transit across the sea. Accessible through online platforms, sea freight tracking tools offer customers transparency and reassurance regarding their shipments' whereabouts.
Import customs clearance
Once the goods arrive at their destination port, they will await import clearance. It also involves completing the necessary forms, declaring the cargo and paying the necessary fees.
Destination handling
This stage covers all the activities necessary to confirm the goods, check the documents including the bill of lading and transport the container to the freight forwarder’s warehouse. Here, the goods will be opened, checked and then sorted for import haulage.
Import haulage
This is the final stage of the process. At this stage, the goods will be transported inland by train or truck to the final destination determined by you.
How Does Sea Freight Work
Shipping lines
Vessel operators that transport goods across the ocean, managing the schedules and network of maritime routes.
Freight forwarders
Service providers that act as intermediaries, coordinating the logistics of moving goods from producers to market, including storage, handling, and shipping arrangements.
Ports
The pivotal hubs where goods are loaded onto and unloaded from ships, managed by port authorities to facilitate international trade efficiently.
What Are The Different Types of Cargo Shipped Through The Sea
The versatility of sea freight allows for the transportation of diverse cargo types. This includes:
Bulk Cargo
Bulk cargo consists of loose materials such as grains, coal, or minerals that are loaded directly into the ship’s hold without any specific packaging.
Break Bulk
Break bulk cargo includes goods too large or heavy to be placed in standard shipping containers and must be handled individually. Items such as machinery, construction materials, and oversized equipment are common examples, requiring specialised loading and handling techniques.
Containerised Cargo
Containerised cargo involves goods securely packed into shipping containers, which is the most common method for transporting manufactured products. Containers are used as they standardise dimensions and simplify the handling, loading, and unloading processes across global shipping facilities.
Liquid Cargoes
Liquid cargoes, such as oils, chemicals, and certain gases, are transported in specially designed tankers that are equipped to handle the movement and storage of liquid substances. These tankers ensure the safe and efficient transportation of volatile and non-volatile liquids through the sea.
